13th Annual Hawaiian Gardens Pow Wow Set For This Weekend

Two-day Celebration Full of Tradition and Cultural Heritage

HAWAIIAN GARDENS, CA — It’s time again for the annual Robert Canada Friendship Pow Wow, where approximately one thousand people from throughout Southern California are expected to gather in Hawaiian Gardens to celebrate and learn about Native American culture and traditions. This year, the Pow Wow will be held at Furgeson Elementary School on Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11. It is free and open to the public.
The 2013 Pow Wow will continue the tradition of providing a gathering place for Native Americans to celebrate and share their culture with one another, and for others who are interested in learning about our community’s strong indigenous heritage. It will host dancers, drums, vendors and artists from across the region, and include children’s activities, food booths, and fun for the whole family.
This year’s Pow Wow will start with the traditional grand entry, where all participating groups and tribes that put together the event make their entrance, usually dressed in their full regalia. Among the tribes and nations expected to participate this year include: Gabrielino Tongva, San Carlos Apache, Dine, Kiowa, Sac and Fox, Apache, Maya, Mexica, Azteca, Paiute, Shoshone, Lakota, Wampanoag, Yaqui, Huipilli, Zapoteco, and Paquel.
