80’s Revisited: New Wave Restaurant in Bellflower

By Tammye McDuff

The 80’s are totally back in full swing, with radical tunes and awesome threads; at least they are at the New Wave Restaurant & Bar in Bellflower.

The Bellflower Chamber hosted their March mixer at this radical establishment. New Wave Restaurant & Bar is an all 80’s themed business, the first of its kind. Their motto is, “Experience the 80’s”.

As soon as you walk through the door, customers are surrounded by a sensory explosion of ‘80’s culture and music. From Pac Man themed entrance to the countless 80’s posters and records that align the walls, New Wave Restaurant & Bar strives to take customers back in time.

Nightly Entertainment including 80’s Dance Parties with World Famous DJ’s, Live 80’s bands, 80’s Karaoke and 80’s Themed Costume Parties.

The menu also has an 80’s twist to it, consisting of casual American cuisine; each item is named after an 80’s reference. Customers can come in and enjoy a Billy Idol Bacon Burger, Culture Club Sandwich or Pee Wee Herman pasta. You can sip their 80’s themed specialty drinks like bomb shots of Duran Duran; mixed shots like The Alf or Daisy Duke Martini’s, which create homage to an 80’s icon, movie or musician.

The experience wouldn’t be complete without topping it off with an order of Depeche a la mode. Ultimately, New Wave Restaurant & Bar aspires to give each customer a place where they can have a delicious meal, tasty drinks and entertainment in an exhilarating and entertaining environment.

The décor is in neon colors, backlights and ‘80s paraphernalia everywhere, vintage LP jackets hung on the wall and an occasional life size painting of Michael Jackson or Madonna. There are two main areas: the stage and dance floor, and a side dining area.

Nightly entertainment includes dance parties, world famous, live 80s Bands, 80s Karaoke and 80s Themed Costume Parties.

Yelp reviewers say it is a “chill place to go and hang out with friends.” The music they play is awesome, lots of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and Tears for Fears. The DJ screens the original music videos over the LCD screens which are a nice touch.

Karaoke is a midweek event, Tuesday through Thursday and the bar is always packed. Flash Pants is the cover band and these guys are hilarious. They put on a great, great show. The club features tribute bands, like Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, and Smiths & Morrissey.
