LA MIRADA CRIME RATE DECREASES IN 2018

STAFF REPORT

La Mirada City officials remain committed to maintaining public safety as the City’s highest priority. During the past year, La Mirada experienced one of the region’s lowest crime rates.  A strong partnership between the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the City’s Public Safety Team, local schools, residents, and businesses has attributed to the decline in crime over the last year.

According to a recent crime analysis of surrounding communities in southeast Los Angeles County and northern Orange County, La Mirada experienced the lowest number of Part 1 crimes last year. Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, larceny, burglary, automobile theft, robbery, assault, and arson.

In 2018, there were 921 Part 1 crimes reported in La Mirada compared to 1,011 in 2017. This represents an overall decrease of 8.91 percent of Part 1 crimes from the past year.

“While crime in La Mirada remains low, the community is reminded that the best tool in preventing crime is to work together,” says Assistant City Manager Anne Haraksin. “The Public Safety Team will continue to work cooperatively with residents to continue to maintain La Mirada safe.”

The Public Safety team encourages active public participation in crime prevention efforts. In the upcoming year, the Public Safety Team will continue its active involvement in the Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs. Outreach efforts to La Mirada residents and businesses will continue to help educate the community of crime trends and prevention tips.
