Harmony Center will host its first annual High School Student Art Contest on October 20 and 21 in Uptown Whittier. Free and open to all high school students, the contest will be judged by acclaimed local artist, Ernest Lacy.
Students from La Mirada High School lead the pack in the number of entries. Also represented is Whittier, La Serna, and California High Schools, submitting artworks in multiple media. Winners will be awarded cash prizes and ribbon honors. Works will be on display in a gallery-style setting on Saturday October 20, and Sunday October 21 at Harmony Center. An awards ceremony to honor the winners will be held at 5:30pm on Saturday October 20 at Harmony Center, 12907 E. Bailey St. Whittier, CA 90601; at the corner of Bailey and Comstock in Uptown Whittier.
The contest is an extension of the 3rd annual Harmony Center Fine Art & Craft Fair held in the adjacent building. The Fair will feature works for sale by high quality and award-winning artists and crafters from around Southern California, including featured artist, Suzette Hodnett. Offerings will include painting, photography, and ceramics, as well as a variety of folk art including wind-chimes, birdhouses, mosaics, wood art, quilts, painted glass, leather, jewelry, painted hats, and handbags. Other highlights not to be missed are the gourd artist, the butterfly lady, and silhouettes by Artist-on-the-Go.
Shoppers can relax to the soothing sound of water trickling in the fountain while enjoying coffee and home-baked cookies in the charming Coffee Garden. Outside, the atmosphere kicks up a notch at Artie’s Back Porch Cafe, where local BBQ legend, Steve’s BBQ will be grillin’ and chillin’ alongside another favorite, That’s Amore Pizza. Entertainment will feature live performances by “Ugly Nelson”,” Ever in Bloom” “Willow Bend Band”, “Small Town Heroes”, and more. After dining, guests can take a seat on the hay bales, enjoy the tunes and cool off with an ice-cold fruit bar from Frozen Fruits 4 You. Be a kid again and have your face painted by the artist on site. Can’t resist the smell of freshly popped popcorn? Why try? Treat yourself to the buttery favorite!

Harmony Center invites all cultural creatives to “live creatively…shop harmoniously” at this free, fundraising event.
