The Rotary Club of La Mirada has approved a $750 contribution to support the cultural programs offered by the La Mirada Symphony.
“Rotary is very pleased to support the wonderful efforts of the La Mirada Symphony Orchestra, which strives to provide excellent quality concerts free of charge to residents of Southern California,” says Rotary President Russell Hall.
Both the Rotary Club of La Mirada and the La Mirada Symphony have a long history of providing benefits to the local community. La Mirada’s Rotary Club formed in 1957, and Rotarians were supported many organizations in the growing community.
Four years later, in 1961, Blanche Nissim, a La Mirada resident and concert pianist, worked with a group of community advocates and local musicians to make a reality of her dream of a Symphony Orchestra in the community. The group’s mission was to provide free concerts for residents who appreciated the cultural value of beautiful music in their lives and an opportunity for local musicians to share their talents.
Over the years, the make-up of the orchestra has changed from mainly hobbyist volunteer musicians to including the many professional musicians the community enjoys hearing today. Such excellence, however, comes with a price.
Symphony officials indicate that the actual cost of each concert is approximately $15,000. In an age when support for the arts from public money is growing increasingly scarce, individual support is more vital than ever. As a result, financial support from individuals, organizations and businesses is increasingly important to the Symphony’s success.
