City of Whittier to Hold Voting Districts Formation Community Meetings

The community is invited to take part in the voting districts formation process by participating in any of three community meetings to be held this month throughout the City.

Residents will have the opportunity to learn about the process and provide input on the make-up of the new City Council districts, reviewing sample maps for discussion and comment. Participants will meet demographics expert, Dave Ely, of Compass Demographics, who has been hired to gather community input and develop district boundaries in a manner that best reflects, among other things, Whittier’s population, demography, geography, communities of interest, and significant and sensitive land issues.

“The City of Whittier has initiated a dynamic districting process that will change the way our community elects its future leadership,” said Whittier City Manager Jeff Collier. “As a result of the voter-approved Charter Amendment, an historic effort is underway to create four geographically-defined City Council voting districts, while the mayor will be directly elected by Whittier’s voters.”

The meeting schedule is as follows:

Whittier Senior Center, 13225 Walnut Street, Whittier, CA 90602

Palm Park, 5703 Palm Avenue, Whittier, CA 90601

Parnell Park, 15390 Lambert Rd., Whittier, CA 90604

The City expects to hold a second round of meetings early next year at which the public will receive updates and provide additional input on the proposed District maps.
