A Message from La Mirada Mayor Ed Eng – Celebrate Springtime in La Mirada

April 7, 2022

Spring is upon us, and I encourage everyone to participate in all that the City of La Mirada has to offer. Whether it is purchasing fresh produce at the new Farmers Market or participating in the Easter Egg Hunt, there is something for everyone in La Mirada.

Last Saturday, La Mirada welcomed the grand opening of the new Farmers Market, and judging by the early sold-out produce, food, and crafts of several vendors, we are optimistic that the weekly event will evolve into a long-term community meeting place and valuable resource for our residents.  Please come support this Farmers Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking area near the La Mirada Activity Center.

April showers bring May flowers and I hope you are ready for the City’s Spring Beautification program!  The program recognizes the efforts of property owners for enhancing the beauty of our community.  Volunteer judges will canvass the neighborhoods searching for the most outstanding homes.  For those of you who recently made exterior renovations, don’t forget to submit an application to be recognized in the “Most Improved” category of the program.  Judging takes place through Friday, April 15.

Our future looks bright!  This year’s Youth in Government program will conclude at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 12.  Outstanding students from La Mirada High School have been working to prepare proposals to enhance our community.  I encourage you to come support the future leaders of tomorrow.

After being derailed by Covid the last couple of years the annual Easter Egg Hunt event returns on Saturday, April 16 from 9 to 11 a.m. at La Mirada Regional Park.  Enjoy the morning participating in an Easter egg hunt and take a photo with the Easter Bunny.  The La Mirada Kiwanis Club will be serving a low-cost pancake breakfast.

Let’s not forget our furry friends.  If you have a pet that needs to be vaccinated, the City is hosting a drive-thru pet clinic on Tuesday, April 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. by appointment only.  To make a reservation for vaccinations, visit heart4pets.org.  You do not need a reservation for purchasing or renewing pet licenses.

Live production is back with a vengeance!  One of the most iconic productions of all time, The Sound of Music will be playing at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts from April 22 through May 15.  The hills will be alive with Rogers and Hammerstein’s biggest hit.  This classical production will be accompanied by a full, live orchestra, and a professional cast of great voices will overflow with uplifting sentiment.  You do not want to miss this!  Purchase your tickets today online at lamireadatheatre.com.

To assist with your spring cleaning, the City is providing paper shredding, mulch distribution, e-waste, and household hazardous waste collections.  The paper shredding, e-waste collection, and mulch distribution will take place Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the La Mirada Community Gymnasium parking lot.  Proof of residency is required.  For other dangerous refuse, Los Angeles County is hosting a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, May 7 near the tennis court parking lots at La Mirada Regional Park.  For more information, call the Public Works Department at (562) 902-2385.

On Friday, April 29, I hope you will join me for an inspiring morning of music, unity, prayer, and fellowship at La Mirada’s Prayer Breakfast.  The event begins at 7 a.m. at the La Mirada Holiday Inn.  The keynote speaker will be Biola University’s legendary Head Coach for the men’s basketball team, Dr. David Holmquist.  To purchase tickets, visit lmmpb.org.

Check out the wide selection of books available for purchase at the La Mirada Friends of the Library annual Spring Book Sale on Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the La Mirada Activity Center.  A special pre-sale for members of the La Mirada Friends of the Library will take place Friday, April 29 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.  Annual memberships can be purchased for $10 at the door.

The relationship between a mother and a daughter is one of the most affectionate and intimate bonds in the family structure.  Guests of all ages are invited to attend our annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon on Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the La Mirada Activity Center.  Tickets are $17 for ages 3 to 11 and $27 for ages 12 and older.

To close out our spring events, the City of La Mirada and the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District are partnering to host a TED talk competition at La Mirada High School.  Students will be preparing TED talks around the themes of grit, tenacity, perseverance, decision making, and overcoming obstacles.  The top five contestants will compete for prize money in a ceremony scheduled for May 19 at La Mirada High School.  You do not want to miss this inaugural event.  Thank you La Mirada Rotary Club for your sponsorship.

On behalf of the City of La Mirada, I look forward to seeing you around town this spring!

Sincerely,

Ed Eng,

La Mirada Mayor
