La Mirada Activity Center looked a little different on October 3 and 4, as the Friends of the Library led a book sale. The group raised a total of $2,862, which will help fund various programs within the La Mirada Library.
Twice a year, the Friends of the Library hosts a two-day book sale, offering a variety of physical media at discounted prices from $1 to $5. The book sale proceeds fund the Friends of the Library book store that is housed within the La Mirada Library, and events at the library, like various children’s programs.
Divided by genre, tables of books went as far as the eye can see. To create this set up, over 15 volunteers gathered on Oct. 3 at 8 a.m. and began the preparations for the first half of the sale, starting at 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. To participate in the first day of the sale, shoppers must be members of the Friends of the Library or purchase a membership on site.
The second day of the sale opened at 9:30 a.m. for everyone to enjoy. Volunteers worked around the clock, assisting shoppers, cashiering, and restocking items. On the last hours of the second day, shoppers were able to purchase a bag for $4 and fill it up with as many books, DVDs, and CDs that can fit. The bags provided were donated by Chris Phillips on behalf of the Bermuda Dunes Grocery Outlet. During this time, volunteers also collected boxes of paperback books that were then donated to prisons. Aside from the semi-annual book sales, the Friends of the Library run a book store that is housed inside of the La Mirada Library. Open from Tuesday through Saturday, the book store has movies, CDs, puzzles, board games, and books, spanning classic literature, vintage novels, children’s novels, and graphic novels, available for purchase.
The next book sale is set for spring 2026. To find out more information, visit the Friends of the Library book store within the La Mirada Library, or visit their Facebook page online.
