ORANGE COUNTY — Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District will conduct overnight mosquito treatments this week in portions of eight Orange County cities following an increase in mosquito populations and concerns about mosquito-borne disease.
Residential areas in Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Orange, Stanton and Westminster are scheduled for treatment Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 26-28.
Truck-mounted treatments are scheduled between midnight and 5:30 a.m. using AquaDuet and/or DeltaGard.
Vector control officials said additional treatment dates and times could be added if mosquito numbers remain elevated or mosquito-borne disease is detected. Treatments could continue throughout the biting season if conditions warrant.
According to the district, the products used at the prescribed application rates will not harm people or pets, even if they are present during treatment. Officials said the treatments also will not harm fruit trees, vegetable gardens or fishponds.
Residents do not need to turn off their air-conditioning systems during the applications, according to the district. Treatments are also scheduled during hours when bees are not active.
The district has an interactive online map allowing residents to enter their address to determine whether their neighborhood falls within one of the scheduled treatment areas.
The treatments come during the height of Southern California’s summer mosquito season, when warm temperatures can increase mosquito activity and create conditions favorable for mosquito-borne illnesses.
Residents are also encouraged to eliminate standing water around their homes, including water collected in buckets, flowerpots, toys, drains and other containers where mosquitoes can breed.
