Mayor Fernando Vasquez continues with Healthy Downey, recognizing those individuals or businesses committed to improving the lives of others within the City of Downey. David Howell, Administrator of the Brookfield Rehabilitation Center, received this coveted award at the City Council meeting, Tuesday, April 8, 2014.
Mayor Vasquez first met Howell a few years back when, Vasquez went to view the rehabilitation center in an effort to reach out to local businesses. At the time the senior center was in much need of repair and renovation. Acquired by Ensign Group in 2003, a 1.9 million investment went toward improvements, Brookfield now boasts as a 5-star nursing facility, with new landscaping, new medians and multiple improvements to the facility.
The Ensign Group, provides skilled nursing and rehabilitative care services through the operation of 82 facilities and one home health and hospice operation, located in California, Arizona, Texas, Washington, Utah, Colorado and Idaho.
The Company’s facilities provide a range of skilled nursing and assisted living services, physical, occupational and speech therapies, and other rehabilitative and healthcare services, for both long-term residents and short-stay rehabilitation patients. Ensign’s facilities have a capacity of approximately 9,500 operational skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living beds.”

Vasquez honors Brookfield by stating ‘In this day and age when health care is all about putting the dollar first, Brookfield is about putting the patient first. I have personal recognition to this, because I have placed my uncles and my grandparents here.”
Although the Ensign Group is the parent company, Vasquez states “The turnaround in the facility started with the heart of a young man who came from North Carolina, graduating from BYU, in business management and finance and who genuinely cares for employees and the community he serves.”
“On behalf of Brookfield Rehabilitation Center it is an honor to receive this award. I feel very humbled by this. Brookfield is an extension of this community,” says Howell “We want to serve as a center for communication, by offering education and health fairs.” Howell went on to thank Dr. Fisher and Dr. Winn formerly of Downey Community Hospital for their expertise stating “at Brookfield we invite you to ‘Be our honored guest’”.
