Bunco parties are big in La Mirada. And so is volunteerism, especially when you know it is for a good cause. Combine the two and you have a summer afternoon of fun, fellowship and fundraising.
That’s what happened when Michele Brunmier, La Mirada Ebell ways and means chairman, hosted a party recently at her La Mirada home. Believing that fundraising, which admittedly requires commitment and time, can go hand-in-hand with fun, Brunmier rolled the dice, asked for potluck dishes and, “Voila!” they all came.
The summertime soiree raised $1500.00 for the 59-year-old La Mirada-based woman’s service club, and is the first of several events set for the 2014-15 Club year. Qualified local high school seniors will be lauded for academic and civic efforts next June.
“Great start for our four scholarships,” said President Mary Abbott of the Club’s first effort. Abbott is a longtime area volunteer beginning her second term at the non-profit club’s helm. Board members are Eva Saenz, membership; Brunmier, ways and means; Susan Cable, program; Socorro Frias, secretary; Rebecca Cline, treasurer; and Marjorie Murphy, parliamentarian.
Andrew Vialpando, Administrative Analyst for the City of La Mirada, will discuss “Emergency Preparedness” at the 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10 meeting. Lesley Watkins will be installed as a new member. Members meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month from September-June at Splash, 13806 La Mirada Blvd., La Mirada. Women of all ages are invited to any meeting, or phone Saenz, 562 698-7639, for further information.
