Phone Scam Advisory: Be Alert and Be Aware
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of telephone scams recently involving suspects posing as law enforcement officials.  The callers usually tell the victim that a warrant has been issued for their arrest and they must pay a sum of money to avoid being arrested.  Victims are instructed to pay the “fines” using money orders, wire transfers, or gift cards.
Government agencies do not solicit for warrant payments or fines by telephone or at your home. Never give your personal information to anyone over the phone, including your bank account information, PIN numbers, or Social Security Number.
If you receive a phone call from an unknown source, always spend the time to verify who the caller is. Do not simply rely on the phone number they provide as verification.  If you receive a suspicious phone call that you believe is not from a real government agency, please contact the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) at (800) 593-8222. You can also file a complaint on the DCA website at dca.lacounty.gov.
If you have sent money or believe that you are a victim of fraud or identity theft, call the La Mirada Community Sheriff’s Station at (562) 902-2960 to file a police report.
