HOLIDAY GREETINGS FROM LA MIRADA MAYOR LARRY MOWLES

La Mirada Mayor Larry Mowles

The holidays are always an exciting and special time in La Mirada. The City offers a variety of events in December to bring our community together to enjoy the holiday season. I encourage you to participate in these festive holiday activities and events.

La Mirada residents help spread holiday cheer with beautifully decorated homes. Many homes are already decorated and bringing the holiday spirit to our neighborhoods.  Residents are welcome to decorate their home during the holidays and participate in the Holiday Home Decorating Program.  Every decorated home is considered for recognition and winning homes receive a holiday ornament.  Judging ends on Wednesday, December 12.

The Chili Holiday Celebration is a fun holiday tradition in La Mirada. This favorite event features a Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, December 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. Participants can enjoy live music, hot dogs, cookies, warm drinks, and of course free chili to kick off the holidays! Guests will also have the opportunity to take photos with Santa and participate in the annual Holiday Wreath Auction which benefits the La Mirada Community Foundation.

Santa Claus will pay special visits to La Mirada homes every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from December 7 through December 24.  Santa home visits are offered at $40 for a 10-minute visit and $50 for a 10-minute visit on Christmas Eve.

Children are encouraged to write letters to Santa and share their special Christmas wish list.  Santa has placed mailboxes at La Mirada City facilities including City Hall and the Resource Center. Boys and girls that write a letter to Santa will receive a personalized reply from Jolly Old St. Nick! Letters must be received by Tuesday, December 18 and must include a return address in order to receive a reply.

The community is invited to help those in need by donating new, unwrapped toys and nonperishable food items in support of La Mirada’s Holiday Toy and Food Drive. Donations can be brought to the Activity Center, City Hall, Community Sheriff’s Station, Gymnasium, La Mirada Library, Resource Center, and Splash! through December 14. This holiday toy and food drive makes it possible to provide assistance to La Mirada families in need during this special time of year. Help us make this a season of giving!

I invite you to be among the first in 2019 to take the plunge into the chilly waters of Buccaneer Bay at Splash! on Tuesday, January 1 from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s a great way to start the New Year!  Adventurers of the Polar Bear Plunge will receive a commemorative photo, hot chocolate, and admission to recreational swimming in the heated 25-yard pool from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Come enjoy our wonderful Aquatics Center.

The holidays are upon us, and it is a good time to celebrate with family and friends. It is also a great time to share with those in need. On behalf of the City of        La Mirada, I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and all the best for 2019!

Sincerely,

Larry Mowles

La Mirada Mayor
