April 13, 2022~The City of La Mirada’s Youth in Government students concluded this year’s program at the City Council meeting held on April 12. Remarkable students from La Mirada High School participated in the award-winning program and made their final presentations to La Mirada City Council.

The students proposed two projects, including a sculpture garden and a teen center.  For the sculpture garden project, students studied neighboring cities and gathered information about budgets, landscaping, and community interests.  Students suggested that the sculpture garden be implemented in La Mirada’s Civic Center to create a community destination and reflect on the City’s rich history.

The second proposed project was to re-establish a teen center at the La Mirada Activity Center. Students explained the benefits involving a teen center at the Activity Center including providing teens with a place to learn, share, and develop their skills.  Students suggested that a teen center would also create a safe social environment.

“The students did an outstanding job with their presentations,” says La Mirada Mayor Ed Eng.  “This award-winning program helps students develop their leadership capacity, communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment which will ultimately better prepare them for a successful future.”

Youth in Government project proposals have often been implemented including the creation of the La Mirada Community Gymnasium, Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, La Mirada College Banner program, and the newly established Farmers Market.

The presentation marked the conclusion of the program, which has been in place for 62 years.  The program is sponsored by the City of La Mirada and the La Mirada Ebell Club. For additional information, contact the Community Services Department at (562) 943-7277.
