Pool Safety

With warm weather approaching, the use of swimming pools will increase significantly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “fatal drowning remains the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages one to 14 years.”

Following these safety tips can help keep you and your family safe:

  • Never allow young children to be left alone in or around the pool.  Be sure an adult is present at all times.  Adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity (such as reading, playing cards, talking on the phone, or mowing the lawn) while supervising children.
  • Utilize the buddy system.  Always swim with a friend and select swimming sites that have lifeguards whenever possible.
  • Babysitters and guardians should always be instructed on the potential hazards in and around the pool area.
  • Never rely on flotation devices or swimming lessons to protect a child.  Twenty-five percent of all drowning victims have had swimming lessons.
  • Never keep toys in or around a pool.
  • Mount flotation devices designed for lifesaving near the pool.
  • Check the pool area if a child is missing before checking any other areas.
  • All adults, children, and babysitters should learn CPR.
  • Keep a telephone outside the pool area.
  • A fence or barrier completely surrounding the pool can prevent many drowning accidents.
