La Mirada residents are reporting a major gas leak that occurred sometime yesterday evening on Oxford Drive near Imperial Highway.

Mary Golden, who alerted the Lamplighter, said her son Kirk Beard was on his usual walk when he smelled gas.

Calls into the Gas Company by both Golden and Beard were met by a “rude” Gas Co. representative who said he “could only talk to one person.”

Golden subsequently called the Norwalk Sheriff’s who immediately transferred her over to the Fire Department.

The Whittier FD located on Santa Gertrudes responded immediately and Beard showed the firemen the area of the leak.

The FD apparently smelled the gas odor and called the Gas Co. who eventually dispatched several trucks.

According to Golden they worked all night and continue to work today. “It looks like a big deal,” said Golden, “they have two big tractors digging, several Gas trucks with trailers and a dump truck.”

The Lamplighter will update when available.
