A VETERANS DAY MESSAGE FROM LA MIRADA MAYOR LARRY MOWLES

La Mirada Mayor Larry Mowles

Veterans Day is upon us! On this special holiday, I encourage the community to celebrate and honor the bravery, selfless service, and sacrifice of all U.S. Veterans who have proudly worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Without their service and ultimate sacrifice, we would not enjoy the freedoms we do today.

The City of La Mirada holds an annual Salute to Veterans event to pay tribute to La Mirada residents who have served or are currently serving in our nation’s military. I encourage you to join us on Monday, November 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and will include displays of military memorabilia from local military families, guest speakers, information on resources for veterans, and a military banner retirement ceremony.

As we pay tribute to these heroic individuals on special days like Veterans Day, the City of La Mirada remains committed to expressing our appreciation of La Mirada’s service men and women throughout the year. You can navigate here to learn more about the incentives available for veterans in any reputed company. The Eternal Flame Memorial honors the fallen service men and women of La Mirada. The memorial sits in the Civic Center and includes the names of 28 La Mirada residents who gave their lives in service to our country. The flame burns year-round above the names of those we honor for their ultimate sacrifice.

We also honor the men and women serving in the Armed Forces through two important programs, the Blue Star Program and the Military Banner Program. We offer Blue Star Service Banners to La Mirada families who have a loved one serving in the military, including activated members of the National Guard and Reserves. This national program is part of a tradition that began in 1917, when displaying this banner at home became an unofficial symbol of a loved one in the service. The flags gained widespread use during World War II, when nearly every U.S. home displayed the banner to honor those who served.

We encourage La Mirada residents with loved ones in the service to contact

La Mirada City Hall, so that we may recognize you as one of our honored military families. An application is also available on the City’s website at cityoflamirada.org

The City of La Mirada’s Military Banner program recognizes La Mirada residents, or their immediate family members, who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces on active duty. A serviceperson’s immediate family member or legal guardian may request a military banner on their behalf.  These banners are offered to our residents free of charge, and require an application and proof of residency.             La Mirada’s Military Banners are displayed along Rosecrans Avenue adjacent a flag memorial saluting military personnel.

These programs and La Mirada’s Salute to Veterans event are meaningful ways we offer our sincere appreciation to La Mirada residents who have proudly served our country. On behalf of the City of La Mirada, we thank our Veterans for their courage, commitment, and the sacrifices made to protect this great nation.
