STAFF REPORT
Benton Middle School is hosting our annual Showcase on Thursday, November 14 from 6:00-7:30 PM. The Showcase will highlight Benton’s award-winning programs across our amazing campus. This event is for both current and future Wolverines. If you are looking for a middle school to challenge your student academically and creatively, please check us out during our Showcase on November 14.
Our world is full of complex issues that will require creative solutions. While many districts have cut arts programs around the state, NLUMSD believes in the correlation between a strong arts education and academic achievement (see Value of Arts Education). Benton Middle School teaches creativity to equip our students with the tools they will need for success in the future. Benton offers over 20 different electives in Band, Guitar, Choir, Drama, Art, Dance, Media Arts, Photography/Video, and Engineering. The school is staffed with five full-time and three part-time elective teachers who specialize in their curriculum to maximize a student’s experience. The school provides the instruments and equipment to fully participate in our amazing electives. In the last year, Benton students have been featured in several nationally-broadcast commercials and network television shows. Seven students’ sun designs have been featured on the CBS Sunday Morning show. And in the 2019 Los Angeles County Fair, Benton students were awarded one Sweepstakes Award, 13 First Place Awards, 19 Second Place Awards, and nine Third Place Awards.
Benton Middle School utilizes a unique block schedule which allows students to take three electives every year without using a zero period or after-school classes. Students alternate four classes each day for 84 minutes. The extended time allows for students to gain a deeper understanding of content and is especially useful in time-intensive courses such as music, art, and science. In the course of middle school, Benton students experience nine different electives. Students are able to grow and develop skills that will follow them the rest of their lives. Students in Photography, Video Production, and Media Arts use new iMacs and receive extensive training on the Adobe Suite software.
The La Mirada Community has a number of opportunities to experience the best of Benton Middle School beyond the Showcase on November 14. The Benton Drama Department will be presenting Goldilocks on Trial on November 13, 15, 21, and 22. Shows begin at 6:30 and we encourage your whole family to attend.
