Staff Report
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is the premier volunteer awards program, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition.
Its mission is to celebrate and hold up role model Americans who are making a positive impact as engaged and deeply committed volunteers.
Richard Gahr High School recognized three AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students with this award on Friday, October 21, 2016, at their annual Homecoming Rally in the gym.
In 2015-2016, over 133,000 Americans were recognized with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, honoring these volunteers’ significant investment of time and talent in their country with Certifying Organization partners like Points of Light and the Corporation for the National and Community Service.
The young men and women of Gahr AVID contributed last year to the more than 64,000 hours that were certified by the program during the 2015-2016 school year.
Presidential recognition sets one apart from his/her peers.
It is a tremendous honor as students serve as a role model on our campus encouraging others to take action.
In order to qualify for the recognition, 9th and 10th grade AVID students needed to complete and verify 50 hours of community service for a Bronze Medal, 75 hours for a Silver Medal, and 100 hours for a Gold Medal.
For 11th and 12th grades, AVID students were encouraged to complete 100 hours for the Bronze, 175 hours for the Silver, and 250 for a Gold Medal.
Richard Gahr High School honored three AVID students with the award.
Two students completed enough community service hours during 2015-2016 to earn the recognition of Silver with at least 75 hours.
The first recipient was 11th grader Issac Edgar Barraza.
Edgar completed his service at various events through his church during the school year.
The second Silver winner was 10th grader Juan Veliz.
Juan supported the AVID club through after school snack sales on campus, park service, and various church events throughout the year.
Finally, the last recipient was 11th grader Marc Rivas.
Marc completed his service hours through his Boy Scout troop 979, based out of Norwalk.
AVID students will continue the tradition of community service for our neighboring cities such as Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Norwalk, and Downey throughout the 2016-2017 school year.
The students have committed to several after school tutoring programs within ABCUSD in addition to service at Gahr High School.
