On Friday and Saturday, the Friends of the La Mirada Library hosted its semi-annual book sale at the La Mirada Activity Center. The book sale garnered much attention and earned a total of over $3,700, which will be used to provide funding for programs and services through the library.
The Friends of the La Mirada Library is a nonprofit organization that helps raise funds to facilitate and support events and resources through the La Mirada Library. Located inside the library, volunteers from the Friends of the Library have a bookstore that not only sells books, magazines, DVDs and CDs, but accepts donations as well.
Twice a year, the Friends of the Library arrange a two-day used book sale, where a selection of used books spanning reference books to classic literature, is available for purchase.
Friday was host to the member-only sale, which gave those with a paid membership to the Friends of the Library the ability to get first pick on available sale items. Saturday was open to the public, allowing anyone interested to participate in the sale. On the final day of the sale, for about two hours, shoppers can participate in the bag sale where shopping bags can be purchased for $3 and shoppers can fill the bag with as much merchandise as it can fit.
Available at the sale were children’s books, fiction and nonfiction novels, classic and religious literature, along with PlayStation games, movies and CDs. A specialty table with autographed books, tabletop books and bundles of vintage books like Nancy Drew novels and the Boxcar Children collection, brought attention to the variety of collectable items that are available through the bookstore.
Run by volunteers, the Friends of the La Mirada Library hosts two book sales a year — once in spring and once in fall. The crew of hard-working volunteers made the event successful as they helped shoppers find specific books, recommended literature and even engaged in friendly and fun conversations.
The book store is open in the La Mirada Library, with the same hours as the library. The book store takes donations of books and audiobooks of all genres, magazines, DVDs and CDs.
